In April 1955 the Department of HEW licensed 6 companies to distribute a newly-developed polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The vaccine's effectiveness had been endorsed by NIH and the Surgeon General. Martin Allen Pond (1912-) graduated from Yale University (B.S. in Engineering, 1935; M.P.H., 1936) and was instructor in Public Health (1936-1941), assistant professor (1941-1942, 1946-1948), lecturer (1948), and sanitary inspector for the Department of University Health (1946-1948).
